I bet we all have been screwed at one time.
Something unfair was done to us.
When you gamble you get screwed.
When you play with the Truth you will get screwed.
The big screw is coming.
It’s in the Middle-East.
My first big screw came in Key West.
We were at Underwater Swimmers School at the Navy Base.
That night, in pairs, we entered the harbor with closed circuit oxygen rebreathers. Our assignment was to attack a moored ship at the dock a mile away. It was dark and spooky. You stay close to your swim buddy. It’s nice not to be alone, and much less dangerous.
After swimming at 10 feet for 20 minutes a quick peek indicted we were way off course and out near the harbor entrance. Took a compass bearing and slipped back below and swam on. Then it felt like we weren’t moving. We had literally swum into the fine mud bottom where the silt density changed so slowly we didn’t initially notice. Yuck luck.
Came up again for a peek and swam for another 20 minutes until I hit something solid. We were in the pilings under a pier a good 40 yards from our target. There was one problem. A moored submarine was between us and our target. Perpendicular. What to do? My logic said do not gamble going back out to the harbor but take a direct shot by going under the sub which would allow a straight course to the ship.
We go down, embracing the enormous circumference of the submarine. At her keel point she was only 3 feet above the hard sand bottom. Oops. If she decided to ballast and sink a little deeper we could be pressed into the bottom. We turned over and put our stomachs to the hull and swam on the straight course to our target.
My hands touched and groped on something metal and big. It was a giant propeller, maybe 15 feet wide… We swam the propeller shaft to the hull and placed our dummy mine and rose to the surface with pride and jest to the surprised crew.
Now that was a big screw!
How do we stop the one headed our way???
